About Roofs 2 Roads
Roofs 2 Roads is an organization that has been working closely with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in an effort to pave roads using recycled asphalt tear-off shingles (RAS). Due to a generous grant given by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment this dream is quickly becoming a reality. Brickey Construction and other Colorado roofing companies have also paired up with the Roofs 2 Roads organization to show support and to help get the ball rolling.
The first project will begin in February 2009 in Boulder County using over 500 tons of recycled shingles and is set to be completed by June. This successful completion will put Colorado in position to become a leader in greenhouse gas reduction, job creation and the innovative use of RAS.
“This project has the potential to divert hundreds of tons of shingles from our landfills,” stated Jennifer Shriver, Roofs 2 Roads Project Manager, “Recycling shingles into asphalt roads can also save thousands of dollars in material costs.”
What is so great about recycling shingles?
Recycled asphalt will replace a significant percentage of asphaltic cement virgin binder in the HMA.
The positive impacts are:
• Every ton of virgin binder replaced with RAS will eliminate 54,000 lbs. of CO2 emissions.
• Hundreds, if not thousands, of tons of shingles will be diverted from landfills.
• Analysis data in Missouri and Minnesota show several years of high performance for roads with RAS content.
• Market analysis other states show the potential savings of over $1,000 per mile of roadway with RAS content.
• This project will be monitored by the CDOT. Their engineers will continue to test and measure the performance of the roads made with RAS contents so they can determine a standard for the use of RAS in Colorado.
